On February 28th, 2021 the 78th annual Golden Globe awards were hosted live and virtually from the Rainbow Room in New York City. Many well-known people were nominated for many categories including Chadwick Boseman, Catherine O’Hara, and more. Out of the 78 years that the Golden Globes has been running many presenters and attendees have noticed the lack of diversity over the years. Especially diversity to those nominated and presenting the awards. This issue was pointed out various times throughout the night and even included in many skits. It is important to include all people in all these types of award events because everyone works in the same industry and should be given the chance to win such a prestigious award.
That being said, with the recent attacks on the Asian community nationwide it is amazing to hear that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has recognized such an amazingly talented director that Chloé Zhao is. Nomadland the movie that was nominated for multiple categories is the film that Chloé Zhao screen wrote and directed! Its Asian females like Chloé who are breaking out in the entertainment industry to represent the Asian community in Hollywood. By doing so, she is making a difference and allowing a unique perspective to tell a story that can be shown to millions of people.
Its Asian female directors like Chloé Zhao who are representing the Asian creative community in Hollywood.
With the rise in Asian representation in Hollywood it began to be more celebrated with the release of Crazy Rich Asians in 2018 by director Jon M. Chu and author Kevin Kwan. This is only the start of a very much needed movement in Hollywood for the representation of various communities that have been truly never shown in movies. Representation for all communities in general is a much needed aspect of the film industry because it allows for the full story to be told, so that it isn’t so one-sided. Hollywood needs to embrace this change because it doesn’t serve the people who watch these films because they don’t see themselves represented therefore the story lacks the communication it needs to have to get its message across.

During the 78th Golden Globe awards was another historical event which was that there were two female directors nominated for the best director category. It took 78 years for that to happen which is absurd to hear that. The women nominated for best director included Chloé Zhao (film: Nomadland), Emerald Fennell (film: Promising Young Women), and Regina King (film One Night in Miami). It is inspiring to hear that female directors are finally getting the recognition after so long. As an aspiring film director, myself it is amazing to hear these achievements and historical events. I hope there is more to come in the future of the entertainment industry.
